The Canyons of LA
If gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, and magnificent vistas, are part of your wish list, you have hit the jackpot! In addition to those, here are some of my favorite things about life in the canyons: dark skies at night twinkling with stars; the site of the full moon rising, unimpeded by buildings; the sounds of coyote, deer, owls and hawks; watching the fog roll in; taking a walk in and among the trees down long winding roads. The list is endless.
If you are one who enjoys walking out the front door for a quick quart of milk, or likes walking to restaurants and bars, then the hills might not be for you. It's a trade off. Me? I'd rather drive 5 or 10 minutes for that milk and watch the gorgeous sunsets we have here in the hills!
Keep in mind that it will take you longer to get to and from home from any major thoroughfare. You will have to add the time it takes to get up and down the hill to your commute calculations, although obviously some homes are further "up" than others. And remember that the general public's use of WAZE and other GPS apps has generally increased hillside traffic as commuters use the hills to avoid the freeways. But this is happening all over Los Angeles, not just in the hillside communities. It almost seems as if we have no real "side streets" anymore... the good news is once you get home, you are nestled in the beauty and quiet of the canyons and won't want to leave!
Parking can be an issue in the hills so just be sure the house itself has sufficient parking for your tastes and lifestyle. Check to be sure any street parking you might want to use is a reasonable walking distance and grade to the house. The good news is hillside neighbors typically cooperate by sharing spaces and information, like info about any pending parties (which often come with an invitation!). And when you have a party, impress your guests with valet service... not only will they appreciate it, you will look super organized, because, well, you are!
